Today we had our first day in Australia! We took a look at our homemade globe, and discussed how Australia is the only continent that is also a country! We also discussed that Australia is in the Southern hemisphere, so when we have summer, it is winter in Australia. We listened to some Australian music today: Crowded House, Wolfmother, Silverchair, AC/DC and Empire of the Sun, to name a few bands. We also learned the Kookaburra song (see video below). We went to the library, but didn't find any kids books about Australia. We stopped at a cafe on the way to the playground, and enjoyed a sip of coffee (ovalmaltine for Eva) and cake. On the way home, I decided to take the bus since Eva was getting tired. Well, Eva got on the bus before me and then the doors closed. Of course I only needed to push a button to get them to open again and get on, but poor Eva looked so concerned that Emma and I would be left behind! For craft time, we made a cool didgeridoo out of a wrapping paper roll, and a Kangaroo puppet (Eva cut out the template herself, but I needed to cut the felt for her with the sharp scissors). The template can be found here:
http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/kangaroo_bag_craft.htm. Eva learned about the Australian flag and colored her own. We also learned a lot about marsupials, and began making some pages for our study book based on the lapbook resources I found here at
homeschoolshare. I made a meat pie for lunch using a recipe from
alldownunder.com. Eva took one bite and decided she hated it and couldn't eat any more. She almost never does this, so I guess she really disliked it. Oh well. Emma had her 1 month check-up and everything looks great! She is exactly on the 50th percentile for height, and is over 100th percentile for weight and, thanks to her dad, head size :) So looks like she may have my stature and Daniel's enormous head (just kidding, honey).

Notice how tight the shirt is. It is a 2-4 month old shirt, haha. |

Eva came home from daycare with this invitation for a concert! We are so excited to go! |

The infamous meat pie. I thought it was pretty tasty, though! |

Way to keep it up! I am notorious for taking a break from blogging which I know is the worst thing to do if you want regular readers...oh well. Well done you!
